Hypnotherapy in Eugene, Oregon: What Your First Session Is Really Like

Most people arrive at their first hypnotherapy session carrying two things: a goal they're ready to work towards, and a few questions about what hypnosis actually is.

Maybe you've pictured a swinging pocket watch, or a stage show where someone clucks like a chicken. Maybe you've tried talk therapy, meditation apps, and breathing exercises, and your body still hasn't gotten the message that it's safe. Maybe you just have a feeling that something here might help.

Wherever you're starting from, you're welcome here. Here's what a first session of somatic hypnotherapy with me looks like, in my Eugene practice or online, so there are fewer unknowns and more room to simply arrive.

First, what hypnosis is (and isn't)

Hypnosis is a natural, focused state of attention. You've been in it many times: absorbed in a book, driving a familiar road on autopilot, drifting in the moments before sleep. In that state, the busy, analyzing part of the mind softens, and the deeper layers of the mind and body become easier to reach.

You stay aware the whole time. You can hear me, speak, move, and open your eyes whenever you like. Nothing happens that you don't agree to. Most clients describe it as deeply relaxed yet quietly alert, like resting at the edge of a forest or a pool, fully present and still.

Somatic hypnotherapy adds one essential ingredient: the body. Rather than only offering suggestions to the mind, we listen to sensation, breath, and the body's own signals, which is often where old patterns of anxiety, tension, and protection live. If you're curious how this differs from classic hypnosis, I wrote more in Somatic Hypnotherapy vs Traditional Hypnotherapy: What's the Difference?

Before we dive in

We’ll start off meeting during an initial consultation. Here, you'll receive a short intake form. We’ll also chat about what's bringing you in, what you'd like to feel more of in your life, and anything I should know to support you well. We’ll also talk about what to expect with somatic hypnotherapy, and have an open dialogue about taking the next steps to work together.

If you're unsure whether hypnotherapy is a fit, you're welcome to reach out at info@aumaya.com first. Asking questions is part of the process.

The session, step by step

First sessions last about 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes, and they unfold slowly.

1. Arriving. We begin with a check-in. I'll ask about how you’re feeling, how it shows up in your body, and what you're hoping to work on. This is also where we agree on how we'll work together and what steps we’ll take in the session to come.

2. Settling. When you're ready, you'll get comfortable, reclining or lying down with a blanket if you'd like. I'll guide your attention gently, softly, down through your body, from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet, noticing and releasing as we go. Then we slowly count down into a deeper state of rest.

3. The inner work. Depending on what you've come for, we might explore where emotion lives in your body, meet an old pattern with more compassion, or build a felt sense of safety you can return to later. I often use nature and sanctuary imagery here, but it always follows your lead.

4. Returning. I'll guide you back gradually, counting up and inviting you to become aware of the present moment once again, the room, and your breath.

5. Integrating. We close with a few minutes of conversation about what you noticed, and a simple practice to carry into the week.

What it might feel like

Everyone's experience is different. Some people see vivid imagery. Others mostly feel sensations: warmth, heaviness, tingling, a loosening in the chest or jaw. Some simply feel very rested. Most people then notice that their week feels different, or a subtle shift has happened in their nervous systems.

All of these are normal. There's no way to do this work wrong.

It's also common to feel a little tender or tired afterward, the way you might after a long cry or a deep massage. I recommend leaving some quiet space after your session: a walk along the river, a cozy cup of tea, an early night.

In person in Eugene, or online

I see clients in person at my Eugene practice in the Whiteaker Friday through Monday. The space is quiet and cozy, designed to help your nervous system feel at ease from the moment you walk in.

If you live elsewhere in Oregon or across the country, sessions work beautifully online over Google Meet. Many people find it easier to relax in their own homes, wrapped in their own blankets. All you need is a private room, headphones, and a comfortable place to recline.

What people come to hypnotherapy for

The clients I work with most often are navigating:

  • Anxiety, chronic stress, and a nervous system that won't settle

  • Sleep difficulties and a racing mind at night

  • Old emotional pain that talking alone hasn't reached

  • Preparation for, or integration after, psychedelic experiences

  • Big life transitions and a longing to feel more at home in the body

If anxiety is what's bringing you in, especially if you feel like you've tried everything, you may find Hypnotherapy for Anxiety When You've Already Tried Everything a helpful read.

Frequently asked questions

Can I be made to do something against my will? No. You remain aware and in choice the entire time, and you can speak up, pause, or end the session whenever you want.

What if I can't be hypnotized? Nearly everyone can experience hypnosis. It's a skill that deepens with practice, and there's no pass or fail.

How many sessions will I need? Some people feel a meaningful shift after one session. Many find that three to six sessions help changes settle into the body. We'll talk about what fits your goals and budget.

Is hypnotherapy a replacement for therapy or medical care? No. Hypnotherapy works well alongside therapy and medical care, and it isn't a substitute for either. If you're in crisis, please reach out to a licensed professional or call or text 988.

Do you offer sliding scale pricing? Yes! Please reach out to me and we can discuss a sliding scale.
